Mission Debrief :

The mark was old. She could have been 80 or 180. It was hard to tell. Shrouded in black silk she stared at me with shrewd eyes. I briefly wondered if my cover story was too far-fetched. I was posing as a billionaire heiress here to source the coveted and rare spider spun silk in order to deck out my entire 8,000 Square Foot home in spider silk curtains. But perhaps a billionaire heiress would have people for that. Either way, that was just the story. My real mission was to retrieve the mark’s famous coffee recipe, whispered about with reverence behind closed doors at the most elite parties.

Covert operations were my favorite type of mission. I could morph into any character I pleased, within the mission parameters of course. While others preferred the danger of espionage, I preferred the push and pull of words, easing the mark to my desired outcome without making them suspicious. That’s how I got my thrills. The mark was still studying me. I returned her gaze until she sighed and said, “follow me.” in a low voice. Perhaps waking her up at 5 A.M. hadn’t been the best call, but it was something an eccentric billionaire heiress might do, AND it made the chances of getting my hands on her coffee recipe all the higher.

I was led through a long dark hallway and into an even darker room. The mark held the door for me then stepped in behind me closing the door. I was on high alert, but the mark wasn’t considered particularly dangerous. After some fumbling the mark clicked the lights on, not that it made it much brighter. Instead, the room was illuminated with black light. There were rows and rows of acetate boxes with one spider per box. “This is the heart of the operation.” The mark said. “Take a look around.” I wandered around the room pretending to be interested in the spiders, the tinsel strength of their silk, and the colors I could get my curtains in. I interspersed yawns strategically between my questions and praised the mark for her stance on spider rights and the elaborate employment package and benefits the spiders got, including paid vacation time. (Hint, hint M2M…). Finally, I convinced the mark I was seriously going to spend $1,000 per yard of spider silk to deck my house in curtains because she said, “Let’s talk business over some coffee.

I can’t guarantee that this recipe will taste the same if you aren’t using spiders that have vacationed in Seychelles, but you’ll get the gist of it with regular ol’ corner spiders. Sometimes you just need a Vietnamese Style Mocha coffee and Tapioca Pearls to jump start your morning…or afternoon – Chicory Webber (Alias)

Prepare Coffee

  1. Place 3 Tbsp of the ground coffee in a Vietnamese drip or a French coffee press. Add ¾ c of the boiling water. Let the coffee steep for 4-5 minutes before pressing or let the coffee drip into a heat proof container.

We used a French press for this recipe. You may need to add the coffee and water in batches depending on the size of the Vietnamese drip if using.
  2. Once the coffee has brewed pour into a pitcher and chill in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Repeat the process for the second serving.

Prepare Spider Eggs

  1. Cook the tapioca pearls according to the instructions on the back of the package. Once the tapioca is cooked (about 15-20 minutes or 5-10 for quick cook boba) strain and place in a bowl.

  2. Add the condensed milk to the bowl and stir to combine.

Assemble Spider Nest

  1. In an espresso glass, (3-4 oz glass) spoon 2-3 tbsp (to taste) of the spider eggs into the bottom of the glass. Drizzle chocolate syrup on the sides of the glass, rotating it so it drizzles down the side. Place glasses in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

  2. In a medium size pot over medium-low heat melt the butter and marshmallows until they are liquid. Remove from heat and let cool slightly while you prepare the drinks.

Don't let the marshmallows cool too much as it will be difficult to string across the top of the drink later.
  3. Remove the glasses from the refrigerator as well as the coffee. Gently pour the coffee on top of the spider eggs being careful to keep the layers distinct.

  4. Once the glasses are full, use a fork or spoon to drizzle the melted marshmallow over the top of the drinks (from one side of the rim to the other) encasing the drink in spider webs. You can top with a few chocolate chips acting as bugs caught in the web.

  5. Stir to mix and enjoy the spider nest.
