Mission Debrief :

I must confess, I thought baby sitting an escaped patient infected with the ZOMBIE virus would be a walk in the park compared to my usual missions. I mean, it’s not like I had to break into a high security vault to get top secret recipes or jump off of a 50-story building while dodging knives and hoping my parachute wouldn’t be compromised. Truth be told, I wasn’t even supposed to go on this mission since I had just come back from a long stint in the field. But hey, the M2M agency was short staffed, so, I had no choice.

The mark was skinny, pale, and sickly, with a look in his eye that told me he thought I looked tastier than the 25 flavors of ice cream blocking him from lunging at me. The mark had run all of the customers out of the local ice cream parlor, Brain Freeze, a real shame since it was Halloween. I didn’t like the look in the mark’s eyes, and I certainly didn’t intend to become his next meal. I lured the mark from behind the ice cream counter, and, after a short tussle, I managed to get the mark to a brightly colored table that was thankfully bolted to the ground. I attached him to the table with a pair of handcuffs. Easy. All I had to do was wait for headquarters to come with the ZOMBIE virus antidote.

Unfortunately, it all went wrong when a child dressed in a cheap ghost costume burst into the parlor yelling about chocolate rainbow sprinkle ice cream. One second was all it took. I should have known better, but alas, I was lax in my vigilance. In the second I was distracted the mark lunged at me snarling and snapping, and more disturbingly, drooling. He caught my hand in his mouth and started chewing. Thankfully, the ZOMBIE virus hadn’t fully infected him so, while it hurt, it was manageable. I pried his jaw off my hand and shoved him away from me and the child. Sensing the danger, the child turned tail and ran out the door screaming. “Have a safe Halloween!” I called after them. I inspected my hand. The mark had drawn blood. Just great. There was only one thing for it.

Prepare Strawberry "Blood" Jam

  1. Wash and remove leaves from strawberries. Place the strawberries in a blender and blend until a smooth puree forms.

If you would like a chunkier texture for added spooky-ness you can leave a few chunks of strawberry for added “brain matter”.
  2. In a small pot over medium heat add the strawberry puree and sugar. Cook until the strawberry syrup begins to thicken about 15-20 minutes. It should be just thick enough to stick to the insides of a cup. Set aside and let cool.

If you want a more vibrant red color, you can add 1-2 drops of red food coloring.

Prepare Whip Cream Topping

  1. In a stand mixer place cream and matcha and whip until stiff peaks form. Set aside.

If you don’t have matcha or want a more vivid green color instead of the light green provided by the matcha, you can add 1-2 drops of green food coloring.

Prepare Milkshake

  1. Cut half of a vanilla bean pod and scrape the seeds out (or use the vanilla bean powder). Place in a blender along with the ice cream, milk, and additional vanilla extract. Blend until smooth.

Assemble

  1. In a tall glass, use a spoon to place the strawberry jam down the inside of the glass rotating the glass. It should look like veins of blood in the zombie brain. Coat the rim of the glass as well. Pour the milkshake in the glass and top with the whip cream.

    Enjoy.
